As candidate for Place One on the Plano ISD Board of Trustees, I want to engage our families, empower our teachers and enrich our schools.
1. Engage our families.
It is imperative that the Board of Trustees proactively engage and listen to our students' families. Information about policies under consideration by the school board is not readily and easily provided to our parents. I am a single, working mother with a child in PISD schools. I have experienced first-hand the lack of communication to parents from the Board of Trustees. I will advocate for greater transparency and parental involvement in district policy-making.
2. Empower our teachers.
Plano ISD's teachers are a large part of what make our schools so great (second only to its students). Our teachers, like our parents, have valuable insights regarding the school system, curriculum and student body. We need to encourage and support greater discretion in our classrooms and schools. Our teachers and administrators are best suited to identify the needs of our students. We need to trust and support their judgment and assessment of students' strengths and weaknesses.
3. Enrich our schools.
Plano ISD is a great school district but there has to be room for exploration and experimentation. We can never be complacent, particularly when we are dealing with our children.
I want to encourage more innovation and creativity in PISD. I would like to see opportunities for classical musical and foreign language instruction in our elementary schools. I want to explore an expansion of magnet programs in all schools, not just the high schools. I also want to create proactive anti-bullying policy. Lastly, I would like to see physical activity encouraged in every grade level, whether it is recess, gym or participation in team sports.
PISD is charged with shaping intelligent, inquisitive, healthy, and responsible citizens of the world. In order to do this successfully, we must look beyond standardized test scores.
John F. Kennedy said that a child mis-educated is a child lost. I do not want to lose a single child in this school district due to an assumption that the way things have always been done is the way things should always be done.
Help me bring a fresh perspective to our Board of Trustees!
