I am Selena Xie, an EMS Commander, paramedic, labor leader, and ICU nurse running for Austin City Council District 8.
As a paramedic, I know that improvements to our transportation infrastructure are a matter of life and death. I know the importance of response times, whether it's for an emergency or constituent services. And I understand the frustration of inaction by City leadership. Just this year, Austin-Travis County EMS has had to shut down five ambulances due to lack of resources from the City Council.
As President of the Austin EMS Association, I fought for our paramedics through the pandemic, ice storms, and the opioid epidemic. I stood up for solutions that bring real affordability so our paramedics can live in the community they serve. I negotiated three contracts with the City of Austin that brought EMS workers all-time high wage increases and family leave.
As a frontline worker, I don’t work from home - and I don’t think our City Council should either. On council, I will bring the same energy to improving affordability, public safety, infrastructure, the environment, constituent services, and communication with residents to District 8 that I brought as EMS Association President. Before I was President, I was stationed in District 8 as a paramedic. I’ve driven in every neighborhood and had the privilege of developing lasting relationships with many in our community. I know we can do better for the people who I’ve been proud to serve. I ask for your support.
